Return Opel — replace losers


The owner of the German automaker Opel is recently the French PSA group (Peugeot-Citroen). It is she who owns the initiative of the return of the popular once in the Russian Federation of the German brand after a four-year forced absence.

Receiving orders for the Grandland X and Zafira Life model began with the Russian division of Opel, which became part of Peugeot Citroen Rus LLC, last December. Thus, the German brand cars have become officially available in Russia for the first time since 2015, when her former owner American General Motors decided to leave the Russian market.

At the moment, two models of the German concern are currently presented in the Russian Federation, as indicated at the Profile website of the company This is the Opel Grandland X crossover, which divides the platform from Peugeot 3008, and the minivan-van Opel Zafira Life. At the same time, the production of the minivan Opel Zafira Life is started at the PSMA factory in Kaluga. It is noteworthy that later at this company should start the release of the Opel Vivaro freight van, which divides the common platform with Citroen Jumpy and Peugeot Expert van, and differs from them only with the trim of the front of the car, including the nameplate and the radiator.

But Recently, TASS reported that the PSA concern plans to establish Opel’s exports collected at the factory in Kaluga. This was told about the managing director of Brands Peugeot, Citroen and Opel in Russia Alexey Volodin. Which countries can be sent to the Russian production machines, while it is unknown.

TASS handed over his words: «Our team definitely lays export plans in the development of its own industrial strategy, because without export plans, they will unknown investments that are required to be carried out and sold in Russia successfully, it is impossible. Therefore, of course, we build our strategy based on exports, «Volodin told.

It is clear that the head of the French group spoke about exports not from a good life. If you contact these Association of European Business (AEB), it turns out that two French stamps are outsiders of the Russian automotive market, occupying 32 and 33 positions in the general list of brands. Sales volumes are low and are at the level of 3-4 thousand cars per year, including light vans. Of course, misses were affected and an unsequeous strategy for the representation of two famous French stamps by the past leadership of the Group in Russia. To contain a whole plant in Kaluga, which can produce 125 thousand cars per year, is inappropriate.

But the current leaders do not lose optimism. In addition to the already represented cars, Opel plans to expand the model line for Russia to six cars. This statement also made the managing director of Brands Peugeot, Citroen and Opel in Russia Alexey Volodin. According to him, by the end of the year the company plans to start sales in the Russian market for four more cars. Thus, until the end of 2020, Opel will be presented in the Russian Federation six models.

One of the novelties will be the cargo van of Opel Vivaro, which is registered at the Kaluga PSMA factory. As adopted by European all-metal vans, the choice will offer three options — a length of 4.6, 4.9 and 5.3 meters. The carrying capacity of the van reaches 1,400 kg, the compartment volume is from 4.6 to 6.6 cubic meters. m. The car has a folding front chair, the sliding doors with an electric drive will be offered for surcharge.

In principle, for a place in the market of all-metal vans, Opel Vivaro can compete and even move someone. After all, he will have an advantage — a local assembly, which will still allow to move in price at the 100th thousand Russian LCV market. But here is such a moment. Opel Vivaro is still less in size, and he has less load capacity than the most popular vans in the domestic LCV market, such as the NEXT or Ford Transit Gazelle. Of course, Vivaro van aims to not the most massive niche of the LCV market. So, again, he will face the scope of sales, as well as his «brothers» in the PSA group.

There are no other novelties for the Russian information market.

But, because after all, the German Opel is a player of the car’s passenger segment of Europe, then we can safely assume that passenger models will come to us. It is, in this segment of PSA in Russia a big failure. It did not become a running models neither in Kaluga sedan Peugeot-408 nor the Citroen C4 co-wavelator.

It can also get the right to life and this option of events. If the goal of the German brand is successful, it will make sense to gradually replace unsuccessful French cars with a more successful German brand. This assumption is based on the fact that today the dealer network of two French brands is extremely unintent. Thus, the French brand Citroen has only 30 official sales points on the territory of the Russian Federation. Not much more Peugeot network. And this is after more than two decades of work on the Russian car market!

However, Opel makes only the first steps in the return process. Now the German brand officially cooperates with 11 dealers, which are located in eight Russian cities: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Nizhnevartovsk, Rostov-on-Don, Nizhny Novgorod, Ryazan, Tyumen and Stavropol.
