Filling the future — what will they be?

Research on the evolution of refueling stations published the largest German fuel retailer ARAL and the Institute of Transport Research of the German Aerospace Center

In his work, entitled «Future Filling Station», they predicted how the driving performance, vehicle fleets, and their movement types and mobility behavior by 2040. In addition, the study covered the role of filling stations that they would play in the future.

As reported in the study, urban filling stations will test transformation with the addition of new services for autonomous fleets, air taxis and the growing amount of electric vehicles. Experts reviewed four types of environment: a large city, countryside, urban district and highway.

According to the study, mobility will grow and that by 2040, the Germans will overcome the car and commercial vehicle more — about 900 billion km per year, adding 24% compared with 2010.

According to the study, commercial transport will double their mileage by 2040 (about 200 billion km) due to the growth of e-commerce business and increase freight traffic by 87%. Private road traffic, will become the only mobility segment that will decrease by 5%.

S 2040 The larger amount of passenger cars will be equipped with hybrid systems. Gasoline and diesel hybrids will prevail with a share of 68% of the total number of car owners, and plug-in hybrids will add 28%. Diesel or gasoline vehicles will be two thirds of the total number of vehicles. In addition, the electrification will continue to grow, and it is expected that 1,3 million electric vehicles will be on German roads.

For refueling stations, three classical business areas — fuel, shop and car wash will remain, but they will adapt to technological advances and changing customer needs.

«The refueling station will certainly continue to play an important role in our mobility in the future. With new functions, it can become the center of our daily life,» said Barbara Lenz, director of the DLR Transport Research Institute.

Filling stations will see the drop in the amount of fuel columns and will add more charge stations instead, especially super-fast charging speakers that can charge cars in five minutes to a range of up to 145 kilometers. Filling stations will use tank-robots for refueling and charging vehicles. The stations will also offer fuel options on natural and liquefied gas.

«In the coming decades, we will continue to score points through the further development of high-quality fuels, which are increasingly containing biocomponents or synthetic fuels, and in this way we can make an important contribution to the growing mobility of our society,» says Patrick Benderter, ARAL CEO.

At gas stations, with the help of the service «Delivery to the house», autonomous vehicles will be able to transport goods from the store home to the Client. At the station in the «Cafe Zone», customers will be able to choose a variety of food options. Also, the refueling station of the future will be able to provide customers with vehicles to continue their joint combined continuation of movement.

New mobility trends will be available at gas stations in a big city. With an increase in the use of autonomous vehicles, filling stations would be able to provide services for them. In addition to maintenance and cleaning, autonomous vehicles under the order will be available from car parking operators.

Due to the increase in the number of electric bikes and electrical cuters at filling stations, batteries for batteries and exchange points, where private drivers and commercial delivery services will be able to exchange empty batteries to charged ones will appear. Another new service gas station of the future may be the provision of businessmen for rent a conference room or a mobile office.

In rural areas, the preservation of its own car will have a central value for mobility, especially due to the fact that due to thinning infrastructure, the movement routes will become increasingly longer. In rural areas, filling stations will be able to act as a venue of social meetings, as well as offer parcel services, as commercial drivers could receive orders for their customers from the station parcels.
