Falling for a decrease in the concentration, not an adjusted safety belt — many events occurring inside the car can have far-reaching consequences. To prevent critical situations when driving and possible accidents, it is planned to integrate sensors in cars that will observe the cabin and control the condition of the driver and other passengers. Bosch has developed a new driver control system based on chambers and artificial intelligence (AI).
«When the car is» to know «, which is happening with the driver and passengers, driving will become more secure and comfortable,» comments Harald Kröger, member of the Robert Bosch GmbH. The system developed by Bosch can be launched in production in 2022. By this time, the EU plans to make such security technologies as a system of preventing concentration and falling asleep, in a list of standard equipment for all new cars. According to the forecasts of the EU Commission, for the period up to 2038, thanks to the new requirements for the equipment of active safety, about 25,000 lives can be saved, and at least 140,000 severe injuries are prevented. Tracking means for the condition of the driver and passengers will also be a step towards solving the global task of creating an automated driving system.
Smart Camera, constantly following the condition of the driver
At a speed of 50 km / h, the car will uncontrollably overcome 42 meters in three seconds if the driver fell asleep or looks at the smartphone screen. Many people underestimate the risk associated with these events. International studies argue that almost every tenth accident is caused by a decrease in the concentration or state of drowsiness. These facts prompted Bosch to take up the development of the control system, which recognizes the signs of the driver’s fatigue, warns the danger and assists in managing management. The camera built into the steering wheel is directed to the driver’s face, and the software recognizes the position of the age, and reacts, if the person closes his eyes. The reaction is also provided in the case when the driver is distracted from the road and turned his head to passengers in the front or backseat. Thanks to the AI, the system makes conclusions from the information received: it can prevent the danger of the inattentive driver, to recommend to stop for recreation, and, in some cases, it may even reduce the speed of movement: the exact reaction may depend on the settings selected by the automatic transfers and legislative requirements in terms of rules Road traffic in the region.

As the automated driving systems are developed, it becomes obvious how important the interaction between the car and the driver. As soon as the autopilot mode is activated, cars will move along the road without the driver’s intervention. Nevertheless, they should also be able to recognize complex situations, such as road work on the route or the approaching congress from the highway to promptly transfer the management of the person. The camera should ensure that the driver in this moment is aware of the situation and was ready for it. If the driver’s eyes remain closed for a long time, the system raises an alarm and does not transmit control until it seems that the driver is not sleeping. «ObservationBosch for the driver will be important for the safety of automatic driving,» says Harald Kröger.

The system developed by Bosch is watching not only for the driver, but also for passengers. For this, the camera installed above or under the rear-view mirror controls the entire cabin. The system is able to monitor whether children or adult passengers of the rear rows of safety belts are fastened, and warns the driver if it sees that the belts are not involved. If someone from the sitting rear leaned too much, sat down in a half-one or put his feet on the seat, airbags and belt tensioner would not be able to properly protect a person in the event of an accident. The tracking chamber will determine the position of the passenger’s body, and control the parameters of the triggering system of passive safety so as to provide the best protection. The system will also prevent airbag response if the passenger seat is occupied by a children’s chair.
